Definition
The in-app review prompt is Apple's built-in pop-up that lets people rate your app without leaving it.
Your app asks for the prompt with a StoreKit call, such as the requestReview action in SwiftUI. Apple's guidelines say apps must use this API to ask for reviews. Custom review prompts are not allowed.
The system decides whether the prompt appears. If a person hasn't rated your app on that device, they see it at most three times in 365 days. In development builds it always shows. In TestFlight builds it never shows. Because it may not appear at all, Apple says not to call it right when someone taps a button.
Why it matters
Each prompt is a rare chance. Apple suggests asking when people are likely to feel happy, such as right after they finish a task. Don't interrupt them, and don't ask on first launch.
Example
A running app asks for a rating only after someone saves their fifth run. It never asks during a run, or right after an error.
